The Sunrise

When night has come
The living creatures die
But the crickets do hum
You cannot see with the naked eye
The woods or the river
but the night soon ends

There is paleness in the sky
Now darkness starts to die
Mist rises from the water
as redness begins to slaugher
the blackness of the night

A breeze comes and life begins
flowers and the woods fill the air
with the sweet smell of victory
as dawn wins
its fight with the night

This was written in the fall of 2003 while my junior English class was studying The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. One of our journal assignments was to write a poem about the famous "sunrise" passage in the book. I know I wrote this one the night before it was due, but my English teacher drew a star next to it, meaning she really liked it. That was a major compliment because she didn't seem to like my other writings. My creative writings got more compliments than my serious ones.

Introduction

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Laura (as you might have already gathered). I am a graduate of Brigham Young University with a degree in English Language (not to be confused with English Literature) and a minor in Editing. I am also a newlywed, a Texan, a bibliophile, a philologist in the original sense (lover of learning and language), a wannabe poet/writer, and an amateur violinist. In other words, I am a nerd and proud of it.

The purpose of this blog is to share my love of literature, poetry, language and other things. My other purpose is to share some of my writings, mainly poetry because I don't have much in the way of stories written down at the moment; they are still brewing in my brain.

Please do not think I am snobbish in anyway. If I were a snob, I wouldn't want to share these things with anyone. I want everyone to gain a certain level of appreciation for the written word.

Enjoy!
